Note: This giveaway ended 10/30/15.

For fall, we're giving away a brand new Helinox Ground Chair, (Reviewed here in Issue 23) a ~22 ounce chair that's great for those more relaxed backpacking trips, day hikes, or even while car camping or just about anything else you can think of. We'll also throw in a TrailGroove hat or shirt of the winner's choosing!

Helinox Ground Chair

How to Enter:

  • Leave a comment below on this blog entry describing the single backpacking/hiking luxury item you'd never leave behind on a backpacking/hiking trip, and why that's the case.
  • Your comment counts as one entry.
  • Once entered, head over to the forum for an additional entry per post between 10/24 and the giveaway drawing. (Maximum 10 entries total)
  • Entries end Friday 10/30 at 5 p.m. Mountain Time. We'll randomly draw one winner from available entries and we'll contact the winner via a private message.
  • The winner will receive a brand new Helinox Ground Chair, and we'll throw in any shirt or hat from the TrailGroove Store.
  • Premium Members automatically receive an entry into the drawing, and can earn up to 20 total entries!

The Fine Print:

For entries to count, the posts should be applicable to backpacking, hiking, the outdoors, etc., and at least somewhat constructive. For instance, we won't be able to count intentionally repeated posts, one word posts (Unless it's a really good one word post), or posts that don't meet our basic forum guidelines agreed to when you register. Essentially, we'll be able to count all normal discussion.

Thanks for visiting, and good luck!

My luxuries are electronic; my iPhone for reading books, listening to music, back up light, taking photos, and a battery charger. Together about 7 oz.

I like to carry my Opinel wooden handle, single blade folding knife. This in addition to my  Swiss knife. I Passed by the Opinel store in Paris years ago, and pulled the cord on the bus to stop. I jumped off and bought this knife which suits me fine when slicing shoes and sausage on the trail.

I often carry my steel Nissan thermos. In Alaska, where I kept my food and kitchen 200 meters from my camp as bear precaution, I'd make a a thermos of hot, unsugared tea before bed, and wake up to a cup of hot tea. Then I'd paddle or walk to my kitchen for breakfast.  In winter it provides a margin of safety if I or my mates get chilled.

A strange computer glitch on my previous post, changed "cheese" to "shoes."

After decades of using a stuff sack filled with clothes, I finally bought a 2 oz inflatable pillow. And I'll never go back.  It works well as a seat cushion or on a long flight to South America, as well. Sweet dreams.

45 years ago on a chill November night, I was the only person sleeping on the floor of the AMC climbers hut in Gunks upstate New York. I was stirred our of my sleep at 11 pm by one of the legends, then 70 year old climber whose name escapes me. He opened a quart of beer and offered me a swig. I refused, citing that it would make me pee in the middle of the night. So he chugged it down himself. I was stirred out of my sleep again when I heard same climber peeing into that very beer bottle. Now, over seventy myself, and still climbing, I carry a pee bottle (wide mouthed) on all my camping and trekking trips. A luxury? To me, a necessity.

My one cup perk coffee pot, because a morning without good coffee is a travesty!

My luxury item is an Espresso machine. The best way to start the morning... :-)

Tough question but a book is almost always included (for you Montana & Wyoming fans, C.J. Box is really good entertainment).  Next on the list would be 750 ml of merlot or a cab.  And I don't consider any of the cameras as luxury items-just part of the "kit" but the long lens is a luxury-not to mention several pounds.

My luxury item would have to be my Six Moon Design chrome dome umbrella, formally from Golite. Tried it out for the first time this summer up in the Sierra heading into the VVR for resupply. I was late for the boat across the lake so I had to hike the extra 4.5 miles not so good trail. I got hammered by a  very intense storm but fortunately this umbrella kept me and my pack dry and I was even able to use it hands free. For most of the trip it seemed to be dead weight, but for the blazing sun or a hail storm, its worth it.

My luxury item is pee bottle.  In the middle of the night I do not have to leave my hammock to relieve myself.

I never go hiking/backpacking without "vet wrap."  It's the 3M bandage tape like the vet offices use.  You can get it at any feed store for about $2.50.  It's the best item for wrapping your toes or hot spots so you don't get blisters.  You can cut it to the length or width you need.  It's better than moleskin and it sticks.  Comes in some wild colors too!  I don't leave on a trip without it!

As I've mentioned before, my luxury item is always a great book.  I love Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey or just about anything by Thoreau.  And yes, I love to quote Thoreau!

My Montbell Down Hugger thermal sheet.  You can see temperatures ranges between near freezing and the mid-80's in Northern Canada all in one trip.  The Down Hugger gives me the flexibility of using it alone on hot nights or as a liner inside my sleeping bag on cold nights.  On cool nights it is nice to leave the sleeping bag partially unzip and drape it over you.

My must have luxury item is a pair of ear plugs. I never wake up to the critters in the night or the snoring fellow hikers. They are perfect for a good night's sleep.

Luxury item is my PStyle, otherwise known as a female urinary device.  It maintains my modesty on mountains with only snow pits for bathrooms.
However, would love to bring a Helinox ground chair....I reviewed this piece of gear for a magazine a few years back when it was new on the market.  I was so impressed with the green anodizing technique they developed in effort to be kind to the environment.  They are truly a company that cares for nature in all areas of their production.

While Backpacking, it has to be my Hammock. I can't sleep on the ground anymore. Hiking, I like my Camera to take some Pics of my hike. Looking at this chair, it would make a great addition to both Backpacking & Hiking. Last overnight was Goldmyer Hot Springs, 9/2015. I could always use this chair for the logging road hikes with the dogs. I'd love to sit on a ridge, and let the dogs investigate the area while I'm getting my second wind.

My luxury item used to be a book, but I've replaced it with my samsung s5, with my kindle on it. Its waterproof and handles several functions. Book, phone, light, weather radio, and gps. Still working on a good way to charge it out there though.

My luxury item is my coffee press, coffee and powdered hazelnut creamer. Nothing better than waking up with a cup of coffee and a beautiful view.

Coffee press, because life's too short for instant coffee......ever!

My indispensable luxury item is a Nalgene flask full of Bulleit Rye whiskey. In addition to it's magical ability to precipitate good feelings and camaraderie, it can also be used to start a fire in a pinch.

Waterproof (rainproof/waterfall proof) camera - it's wonderful to capture nature in art and art in nature.  Too, memories and time provide new perspectives as you look back at your adventures.

I bring a paperback book on every trip. It's a luxury for others but not me.

My luxury item is my phone! I love to take pictures of my adventures! Plus it is a great GPS navigation!

Everyone uses a sleep pad, of course, but my lux item is a thick, inflatable pad so I can slumber in comfort.  Luckily over the years, the inflatables have gotten lighter than the heavy beast I schepped around years ago, so luxury is not so burdensome as it once was for me.  Now, a lightweight camp chair would make camp more comfortable when I am kayak camping.  Hmmm.  Wonder where I can get one?
