The edges of meadows are great places to sleep. All of that grass and organic matter is soft and you do not need to dig in it. Early in the year, even early summer they can be too wet.  They are also colder because of the dampness and lack of thermal cover.  They are a good choice in the fall and late summer.  Early in the year I look for a deep duff layer in an upland site protected from the wind in the trees but exposed to the first rays of the morning sun.

The less gear you bring the more you need to now about site selection to be comfortable.
