For many years I traveled throughout the canyon country of the desert southwest taking day hikes and long backpacking trips. Some years I’d literally throw a dart at the map to help me decide which canyon I’d get lost in next. Carrying my trusty point-and-shoot camera, I’d photograph the light and shadow of the canyon, but found out quite early that those bright sunny images of fall color didn’t look so good on film. I also noticed that the play of light and shadow which seemed subtle to my eyes took on too much contrast through the “eyes” of my camera...
