Lately I have been refering to the classic "Wilderness and the American Mind" by Nash.  This book was originally published around 1968, and has been reprinted at least 5 times.  It does a wonderful job of describing the evolution of our thought process with regard to wild lands.  It is very thought provoking and a great book to discuss around a campfire.

There are chapters on Thoreau and Muir, two people that had a lot to do with choice of an outdoor career.

Read this book if you are a backpacker.
