If you ask five people when backpacking and hiking season is, you will probably get five different answers. For those that want to extend their own personal season into the fringes of the shoulder seasons and even into the heart of winter, there are a couple things that will be necessary. Warmer gear can only get you so far, and as it gets icy, you’ll need to add something to your footwear to help with traction…

Ted Ehrlich reviews the Microspikes from Kahtoola in Issue 19 – Check out the full review below:

I can add my endorsement. I don't use them often, but when conditions require them (i.e. icy terrain which isn't so steep as to require crampons), they are invaluable. I will most likely be using them in a few weeks in a climb of Colorado's high point (Mt Elbert 14,433). We will be camping overnight at treeline for those winter camping enthusiasts!

Pretty sure there is a pair for me under the tree..because I gave the travel coordinates to my husband on how to get to REI.

Did he follow your directions? :P

Elbert is on my winter list this year too Jon. It's a beautiful hike year round.

Why yes he did! I get to use them on a glacier trek above Zermatt!

Oooo, Switzerland. Make sure to sing one of the sound of music songs while your out running around on their "hills", lol :)
