Hi, I'm new to the adventurous hiking department. Looking forward to logging some miles. Is there any tips or suggestions for a newbie in training?

I would suggest you:

Don't take on too much of a challenge too soon. Start with easier trails first and work up to more difficult.

Absolutely make sure you bring along plenty of water. Hydrate!

Wear the right clothing/use quality gear.

Definitely wear a good pair of shoes or boots.

Ask around or check the internet for some good local trails, perhaps meet some other outdoors people.

Keep a record and take photos. You can review your trip and learn.

Don't be afraid to make a mistake, I've made plenty. Just "hike smart"!

Read TrailGroove! It's an excellent source of great information.

Most importantly, have fun!

-- may I add in protecting your legs is very important to avoid ticks and plants such a Poison ivy/oak. I also recommend trekking poles even if you don't have bad joints, this will help avoid fatigue going up and down hills.

- And make sure to share the adventure with the rest of us!

Everything Gary said, and if you solo, always let someone know where you're going and how long you expect to be gone.
