I’d had my eye on the pass for the last 15 miles on foot – and even farther if you count the drive in. It’s high enough to see from a solid chunk of Western Wyoming on a clear day. It was hard to see now though – too much smoke was in the air, not from any fire here but from fires all over the west. Just getting there has been on my mind for years, maybe even close to a decade. There’s even been an attempt or two on other trips, but there was just never enough time. When vistas presented themselves between intervals of forest now however, I only stole the briefest of glances in the direction of my smoky goal...
