Star Gazing

Last night the Tahoe Rim Trail organization held a star gazing event...actually it was a meteor gazing event! We all met up at Mt Rose meadows (elevation 8900) to sit in a dark meadow to observe the Geminid meteor shower. As we sat bundled up in the snow, in the 9 degree temps, a very entertaining and informative astronomy professor regaled us of tales of Greek mythology and pointed out the corresponding constellations. We arrived at 8:15 pm and stayed out until 10 pm but were a bit early to see a lot of the shooting stars. The peak was between midnight and 2 am. Fun adventure capped off with hot chocolate and almond cookies. I must say, I'm not sure how well I would enjoy winter camping. In the short time we were sitting, my feet were FROZEN.

Sounds like a cool event! (Or should that be cold event? :D) We were able to catch some of the show here as well on Thursday night. I kept checking at intervals - I didn't see anything at 8, 9, or even after 10 PM, so just as I had started to lose hope I checked one last time around midnight... And was surprised to see a streak go through the sky about every 30 seconds. Very impressive for sure - Went out last night trying to catch a few more but the clouds had rolled in and we were out of luck. :)

I miss visiting the Lowell Observatory when I lived in Flagstaff. We have a few small events here in NC. They have some at Lake James State Park nearby. We peak though some of the telescopes a local astronomy club brings, and then just crawl into the tent/hammock at the campground.
