Wildfire smoke is an unfortunately common possibility when hiking in much of the West in the late summer months (and often even earlier for the southern parts of the Rockies and California). Although fire season officially begins in May for the various government agencies tasked with fighting fires, it usually isn't until July and August that it is in full swing in the West and clouds of smoke, closed roads and trails, and active fires start to negatively impact travel plans. If you plan your trips much earlier than July you typically risk snow-covered passes and other early season issues, like streams rushing with snowmelt...
