For any hiker or backpacker that embarks on winter trips or keeps their hiking routine up no matter the weather, a good pair of gaiters are essentially a required item for keeping snow and ice out of your footwear and subsequently keeping your feet as dry as possible in frigid conditions. Gaiters also add warmth, and for 3-season hiking are optional items that can help keep debris out of your shoes and assist in keeping your feet dry if you opt for waterproof footwear. All gaiters seem to be a tradeoff in regards to convenience, weight, and performance.
