Hiking the Anza Borrego on the Desert Trail

I like snowshoeing and cross-country skiing well enough, and always get out for a couple of overnight trips in the Colorado mountains each winter. But what I really like is walking. By that I mean walking unencumbered by any large pieces of gear strapped to my feet. By late winter, it’s been too long since I’ve been able to throw a pack on my back and travel through the backcountry, and this is a problem for me. The obvious solution is to head down to the desert. But which one? I did a loop through Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in January of 2018, dodging mysterious lights from other unknown walkers under a lunar eclipse. That was good, but I feel like I covered much of that area. A bit of research uncovered something called the Desert Trail, which runs from Mexico to Oregon through the Mojave and Great Basin deserts...
