No gear is more integral to backpacking than, well, a backpack. It carries everything you need for survival and comfort. In addition, it is wrapped around your body for much of the day. It’s no exaggeration to say that the choice of backpack can make or break the success of a trip. A heavy, ill-fitting or uncomfortable pack will make every step of your hike unpleasant if not downright painful. No item, with the possible exception of shoes, is more able to turn a trail into a trial. So it’s worth spending some time thinking about exactly how you are going to use a pack. The pack you want for leading a youth group a couple miles up to a lakeside base camp is not the one you’ll want for finishing the CDT before the snow flies. The good news is that there are a number of high-quality packs available for any use scenario you can think of. The pack-making industry is mature, competitive, and diversified. You will get what you pay for in terms of quality and features. You just have to decide what you need and how much you can pay.
