An easy compositional rule you can follow when you’re taking pictures on the trail is the “rule of thirds.” The Greeks thought of it a few thousand years ago, so it’s been around for a while, but it still holds today: simply divide your frame up vertically and horizontally by thirds, and then place your subject where those lines cross or somewhere in that vicinity.
