As spring progresses, many of us begin to turn our gaze towards those higher elevation mountain backpacking trips of summer that we’ve been dreaming about all winter. But while we may have been hiking on dry trails at lower elevations for weeks, the mountains and higher elevations may still be inundated with snow. For some this is cause for wait, and understandably so. For others, we might not know whether to hit the trail in trail runners or snowshoes. To determine just how much snow is actually on the mountains, a spring hiker has a few tools at their disposal...
