A shortcut – it was too obvious. For years I’d simply followed the marked trail in. A favorite area in the wilderness and a favorite fishing spot with a heck of a view, it had become a go-to destination after I stumbled upon the area – all while trying to get somewhere else on another trip. But looking at the map again for the yearly trip in – even though I had the route memorized by now, I saw the pass. No trail led over this pass on the map. It wasn’t named. But if passable, it would shorten the long trail in and by several miles...

The creation of new  cairns depicting an individual's new route might be akin to scribbling ones name over ancient petroglyphs.
