Route planner?

Hello all, just was wondering if anyone here knew of a software or website available that would let me select or draw certain routes. I am in the works of planning a cross country hike from coast to coast and can't figure out a way to bold out US routes I'm interested in to help plan out my route.

I expect to be able to follow one or two routes for the vast majority of my trip via roads such as US route 6 or US route 50, but wish there was a tool somewhere available that could help me sort things out a little easier then google maps is making it. Most popular map sites cater solely to driving directions.

What types of features are you looking for? Have you tried making a custom map through Google Maps? I've had pretty good success drawing up custom routes and calculating mileage this way.
