Uwharrie National Forest

The Uwharrie National Forest is one of our favorite hiking trails that is within an hour drive from Greensboro. This is a great trail to kick off the year. With over 30 miles of trails there are many loops, up and downs, bog, rocks and roots. While not a difficult trail you get exposed to many kinds of terrains. This is our shake out hike every year and the best time to hike it in our opinion is right now to early spring. There is abundant wild life to be seen as well as foliage. We have seen all kinds of animals; turkeys, fox, deer, owls, hawks... Plenty of wildflowers and ferns as well. We have never had a bad experience on the trail. Tips we have learned are don't hike during hunting season, during late spring there are a lot of Boy Scouts on the trail which makes the campsites crowded(they have always been respectful and willing to make room for us), during late spring we have seen rats around the streams, and have run into 2-3 rattlesnakes. These are the reasons we like to hike there in the winter to early spring. Really is a great place to stretch your legs & test your equipment.

It is a nice place for hiking and camping. I have only done 6 miles of the Uwharrie Trail and want to go back and do some more.

I usually do a 42 mile hike one or twice per year from the 1306 trailhead down the Uwharrie trail then back via the Dutchman creek trail back to the Uwharrie trail.

We usually hike to north end of trail from 109 back to the creek. Next day hike south do the upper loop of Dutchman Uwharrie trail. We mostly hike AT whenever we can get away. Son is dropping hints time to get out again.post-1332-143508725456_thumb.jpg
