Note: This giveaway ended 10/30/15.

For fall, we're giving away a brand new Helinox Ground Chair, (Reviewed here in Issue 23) a ~22 ounce chair that's great for those more relaxed backpacking trips, day hikes, or even while car camping or just about anything else you can think of. We'll also throw in a TrailGroove hat or shirt of the winner's choosing!

Helinox Ground Chair

How to Enter:

  • Leave a comment below on this blog entry describing the single backpacking/hiking luxury item you'd never leave behind on a backpacking/hiking trip, and why that's the case.
  • Your comment counts as one entry.
  • Once entered, head over to the forum for an additional entry per post between 10/24 and the giveaway drawing. (Maximum 10 entries total)
  • Entries end Friday 10/30 at 5 p.m. Mountain Time. We'll randomly draw one winner from available entries and we'll contact the winner via a private message.
  • The winner will receive a brand new Helinox Ground Chair, and we'll throw in any shirt or hat from the TrailGroove Store.
  • Premium Members automatically receive an entry into the drawing, and can earn up to 20 total entries!

The Fine Print:

For entries to count, the posts should be applicable to backpacking, hiking, the outdoors, etc., and at least somewhat constructive. For instance, we won't be able to count intentionally repeated posts, one word posts (Unless it's a really good one word post), or posts that don't meet our basic forum guidelines agreed to when you register. Essentially, we'll be able to count all normal discussion.

Thanks for visiting, and good luck!

I carry my iPhone but that is not the luxury.  My luxury item is a solar charger that charges my iPhone as I hike.  It is invaluable for allowing me to read on my kindle app on my phone, I am a voracious reader and my phone allows me to bring along hundreds of books  and is much smaller than a kindle or even a book.

My Luxury item is definitely carrying my Micro 4/3rds camera with me to take some shots. Definitely worth the pounds

I bring my Kindle.  Nothing so settled my addled hiking mind as a few minutes every night reading about Sam and Frodo on their journey.

My luxury items are a dirty water bag and five feet of tubing so that I can gravity feed through my filter into a clean water bag while I do other stuff, sometimes just watching the beauty around me. I detest chemical flavors, batteries, and squeezing a water bag when I'm tired!

The luxury item I always carry is my smartphone.  I put it on airplane mode, so I'm not distracted by it. But it's lighter and more compact than a camera. So I can easily take photos, then share them when I get home.

I have to have my pillow.  It's a DIY pillow stuffed with actual pillow polyfill for my hammock.  I sleep much better with an actual pillow.

It IS Starbucks Via because it's that much easier to wait for the sun to come up on those bitter mornings, then usher in a glorious warm day at sunrise with a hot cup of this stuff. It's such a surprisingly high quality for such a little bit of space. I always make sure to pack extra, I'd be sad if I forgot the stuff at this point.

I guess mine would have to actually be my hiking stick. A friend of mine gave me this stick a long time ago. He cut it himself (maple) and done some carvings on it. I have hiked with it for almost 20 years now. It has become more of a part of me than just another "hiking stick." Over the past 4 or 5 years, I find that I keep it in my truck with me everywhere I go, and it goes with me now on something as casual as a walk downtown!! It has seen many many miles and I hope we will walk many more together. It is for sure an old friend. Should I give it a name as well????  Give me thoughts, comments, suggestions on that!!  :)

I'd bring an e-reader fully loaded with books with a solar charger to keep it charged. At the rate I read, the weight of the physical books I would bring would be burdensome and with an e-reader I wouldn't have to worry about a light source.

Much needed for my sensational body to relax during my hikes.

My luxury item is Now-and-Laters (the candy). I don't take a watch with me when I hike. This is intentional because I want to purposefully disconnect with the outside world. On one solo hike I was pressing hard to reach the town of Hot Springs on the AT by sundown because I was nearly out of water and really wanted to sleep in a real bed that night. The sun was low and I wasn't sure if I could make it with the amount of miles left so I started paying attention to how long it took me to eat a Now-and-Later per mile. Turns out it took me about a mile and a half per piece of candy and it actually helped me gauge my time till sunset. Sounds crazy, but it worked!

The luxury item I make sure to always have is my camera. You never know when the opportunity for a great shot will come up!

A pillow. A good nights sleep is a must and a good, thick pillow is the only way I can get one.

I'm a desert dweller so I never go backpacking without my chrome dome sun umbrella. I'm pretty sure it also deters mountain lion attacks. And guess what? It works IN THE RAIN, TOO!! Totally worth the extra space and weight to carry.

I take a cotton pillow case. I then fill with clothes at night as use as a pillow. I wouldn't go without it.
