Help! There are 5 of us that had planned a wonderful 40 mile backpacking trip through the Nantahala Mountains in NC for next week, now it looks like it may be thunderstorms most of the week. Therefore, it means a last minute trip change :( ...  Upon first glance WV looks promising, however we are coming from MI and anything under 9 hours would be do-able. Any suggestions would be extremely appreciated. We are hoping to find something with some elevation still if possible.

Please and thank you!

Dolly Sods in WV. You would have to backtrack if you wanted 40 miles, but it is a pretty awesome place. I posted a trip report for the day after thanksgiving

Just to be clear, I said backTRACK. If you look at the map of the area, there are a lot of trails, but you will have to overlap/repeat some if you want to do 40 miles. It is very easy to do 20-25 miles without repeating a trail.
