I am 6 ft 4 and 290 lbs I want a light sleeping bag that doesn't fit like a full body straitjacket. Any suggestions. I prefer hammocking but also ground camp often also.

Montbell makes some nice stretchy ones and while I went with an Western Mountaineering Alpinelite in the long size it might be tight for you. (I'm 6'1-205 and it fits me very well with my spinning overnight like a top inside the thing). Montbell is supposed to be every bit as good. Another brand to look at might be Feathered Friends. Good luck on the hunt (from a fellow ground and hammock camper)

Big Agnes makes the Summit Park 15 down bag which has extra space in the shoulders, hip and foot box. Shoulder girth is 80.5", hip girth is 74.5" and foot girth is 66". I use a standard length Marmot Helium bag and the shoulder girth is 61", hip girth is 57" and foot girth is 39" so you can see that the Big Agnes sleeping bag is substantially roomier.

The Big Agnes bag weighs 3lbs 11oz and REI sells it. Here are a couple of links for it:

Hope this helps!

I am also thinking king about a quilt. I have never used one or had my hands on one to fee out how it will cover and tuck around and not leak air and gap at sides . Any observations on that?

Check out Enlightened Equipment. They make nice quilts in a variety of sizes and at a very reasonable price. The wide width quilt can wrap around my entire body like a sleeping bag, so it is pretty roomy as the quilt isn't intended to be underneath your body in the first place other than to tuck in the sides eliminating drafts. It weighs 26oz and packs very small. I am 6' 190lbs for reference.
